websites: RuangRupa & OK.Video
produced: 2007/07/01
duration: 1 minute 50 seconds

Video from the OK.VIDEO Jakarta International Video Festival 2007. This video was produced during the OK. Video Militia workshop in Semarang, held at the Yaitu Art House, involving two other communities: Videot and Kronik Film. Yaitu Art House is a contemporary art gallery, Videot community is a group of art students form the State University of Semarang, and Kronik Film is the Students' Activity Unit of the Diponegoro University. Eighteen participants took part in the workshop; most of them were students or artists.

(ENGLISH) The low-lying region of Semarang is known as the Lower Town and often suffers from flood, which in some areas is caused by seawater overflow. The southern part of Semarang, which lies on high land, is known as Upper Town. Semarang has the art of warak ngendhog and dugdheran, held around the Moslem fasting month of Ramadan. The Chinese community of Semarang, through the community of Kopi Semawis (the Community of Semarang's Chinatown for Tourism), often holds the Semawis Market, a fair selling miscellaneous food of Semarang. This is such a big Chinese community which helps grow the economy, trade, and tourism in the city, that the city of Beiha in southern China proposes to be Semarang's 'Sister City'. Semarang has the slogan of 'ATLAS' (literally means 'map' but is actually an acronym for the Indonesian words meaning Safe, Orderly, Smooth, Beautiful, and Healthy). Aside from it, Semarang is a city actively preserving the heritage building and maintains the traditions and constructions it retained from the Dutch and the Chinese. Some of the heritage sites are still preserved and become tour destinations, as well as locations for various Indonesian films.

OK.Video Militia: Choir

produced: 2007/06/06
duration: 6 minutes 30 seconds

From the OK.VIDEO Jakarta International Video Festival 2007. This is a poetic video produced during the OK. Video Militia workshop in Depok which was held alongside with the punk community and the community of street children who like to hang out at the New Depok Station.

(ENGLISH) Depok is the supporting area of the capital city of Jakarta. Situated right on the south of Jakarta, between Jakarta and Bogor, since April 20, 1999, Depok has been designated as a municipality that is distinct from the Regency of Bogor. When it was only an administrative district in 1982, Depok had only 240,000 people, and when it became a municipality in 1999, it already housed 1.2 million people. Many of the older areas in Depok are remnants from the colonial time, and the people still living there are often called 'Depok Dutch'. These areas are being marginalized now. The economic growth of the town is thanks to its existence as an industrial and shopping area, as well as education provider. The presence of the University of Indonesia and the Gunadharma University, with such a huge number of students, make the town lives on the students-related economic activities.

(ENGLISH) Workshop in Depok was held alongside with the punk community and the community of street children who like to hang out at the New Depok Station. The community called themselves 'Box House', a name that emerged during the workshop. Seven people participated in the workshop, which took place on May 15 and 16, and resumed on June 3 to June 6, 2007.

(ENGLISH) The majority of the video works resulting from the workshop talk about train-related activities. Nine of them are: Mau ke Mana? (Where're You Goin'?), Re-load, Pulang – Pergi (Coming and Going), Un-incident (arrival-departure on the train), and De-Ja-Vu; all talk about trains and the community surrounding them. Meanwhile, Sarkem (Pasar Kemiri) (Kemiri Market) talks about the life in the market and the vendors who start coming there from three in the morning. Then there is a poetic video, Choir. There is also a video about a construction from the colonial era, Djembatan Panoes "Riwayatmu Kini" (The Panoes Bridge "Your Story Thus"). Last, there is also the video Dalam Kotak, di Dalam Tralis (Within Box, in the Bars), which is a highly experimental work about the visuals and the reality. Most of the video works show the close relationship between the participants and their immediate environment: the train station.

(Hibi no neiro)

Too slow? Go to the Youtube URL
and while you're there, visit co-director Masashi Kawamura's Youtube channel masakaaa.

Here's some info shamelessly lifted from the fantastic No Fat Clips blog:

A genius piece of low fidelity, highly funny digital patchwork. A music video starring the Internet, that is you. Almost.
Sour is a Japanese post-rock band formed in spring 2002 by hoshijima, Sohey and KENNNNN.
Hibi no Neiro (Tone of Everyday) is the lead single to their first mini album Water Flavor EP released on July 24 2009.
Seems like synaesthesias are all the rage lately, since this song asks: “Which color is your melody?” Anyway…
The music video was directed by Masashi Kawamura, Hal Kirkland, Magico Nakamura, Masayoshi Nakamura.
“The song is about discovering your own color or voice in this world. It speaks of embracing your individuality in order to embrace what the rest of the world has to offer. The use of the web-cam and the idea of capturing people’s individual expressions as they collaborate to make a greater whole, made a lot of sense.

Dunno about you, but doesn't this seem to follow in the tradition of the Milk & Cereal meme? Though of course, the production quality here is way more finer than VT's Finest. And then there's that Israeli Kutiman's Youtube project. Hmm...

Kudos to the creators and No Fat Clips!!!

18?

Directed & produced by Danny Lim, 2004

Editor: Azharr Rudin // Videographer: John Cheah // Still Photography: Danny Lim, Lim Ai Leen, Ooi Kooi Hin, Whoever Shot The Pictures In The CD containing "KL Street Art 2003" pictures // Song: “Taste of Blood” Written and performed by Jerome Kugan // Interviewees: Azlina Shahrim, Hishamuddin Rais, Eric Paulsen, Sonia Randhawa, Seah Lu Sean, Tan Sei Hon, Tshiung Han See, Pat Wong, Yee I-Lann // Special Thanks to Amir Muhammad, Chuah Siew Eng, Sharaad Kuttan, Street graffiti artists and everyone else who assisted in this production

What is 18? This mysterious number is but one of a prominent crop of graffiti that has popped up around the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Sprayed at strategic urban spaces and applied with a seemingly socio-political agenda, the 18? graffiti and its like (eg “Legalize ganja”, “Ada apa dengan National Service?”, “Pertahankan Hak Asasi”, etc) brazenly takes its place alongside advertising banners and billboards in our urban sightlines.

What does it mean? What is it selling? Why? Who did it? 18? - the documentary - attempts to uncover the mystery behind the graffiti.

Benjamin McKay's review of the 2005 Singapore International Film Festival for Senses of Cinema website has this to say about 18? (in the final para): "But in concluding this report let me just mention one more short film that rose up and hit this reviewer in the face at SIFF 2005, for the film itself better answers the question I so arrogantly pondered, and the good news is that you the reader can share this little gem with me, for in the spirit of the film, it has no copyright. I am talking about Malaysian director Danny Lim’s 18? (2004), a film that in a quirky 18 minutes takes us to the streets of Kuala Lumpur to investigate the search for the space to criticise and to create and along the way addresses several interesting questions about who an artist might well be and what role art may have in a critical engagement with a given society."

Danny Lim bio (from Amir Muhammad's blog):
Malacca-born Danny Lim is primarily a writer and photojournalist. His features and photo essays have been published locally and internationally by the Far Eastern Economic Review, The Smithsonian Institute, Vogue (Italy), Off The Edge, The Sun, The Edge, The Nut Graph, The Malaysian Insider and Malaysiakini.

Oberhausen's Unreal Asia catalogue

55th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen ended with a record attendance. The festival counted the highest number of entries since 1998, even more than in 2004, when the festival celebrated its 50th anniversary.

During the six festival days almost 600 short films and videos were screened in 91 programme. More than 1.000 accredited guest visited Oberhausen.

The festival catalogue of the 55th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen is now available for download at their website. <--right click this link and save.

A special program in this year's festival, “Unreal Asia” focuses on short films from Southeast Asia and the complicated post-colonial legacy of this region.

Excerpt:

U n r e a l A s i a
curated and presented by Gridthiya Gaweewong and David Teh

Does realism have any native counterpart in Asian aesthetics? In the West, claims
to reality are underwritten by recourse to observed fact, or the scientific method.
Film often makes its own claims on the basis of, and as an instrument of, this paradigm.
In much of Asia, however, this rationalist episteme – part and parcel of modernity
– is yet to assert itself. So should we not reassess realism’s various modes
(social realism, surrealism, the hyperreal, “real footage”, documentary, “reality
TV”, etc.)? For the basis of the exchange between art and life – how lived reality is
registered by and entered into culture – is far from universal, and ought to be
theorised from local perspectives.

This task is complicated, however, by film’s privileged relationship to reality, and
by the prominent role moving images have played in Asian modernisation. For over
a century, film has been a vehicle of the traffic between Asian and non-Asian cultures,
of articulations between past and present, of the imaging and imagining of
these inter-cultural realities. Still, real-footage may not imply the same “indexical”
relation to reality as it does elsewhere. Might we interpret documentary images in
other ways, or re-examine fictive and non-realist(ic) modes for their recording
value?
What other indices of the Real might prevail in this region? The family? The
state? Tradition? Death? How do they frame culture and social life? And how do
visual media, particularly digital media, transmit these framings? What would a
realism look like – or social realism, or surrealism – if it was informed by the tropical
metropolis, Confucian family values, Buddhist funerary rituals, localised Islam,
or Asian paternalistic dictatorship?

In contrast with the West, many Asian beliefs stem from ancestral worship and
animism. Everyday spirituality retains much that is superstitious and supernatural.
The transformation from agricultural societies to modern states might appear to
be well advanced, but mentally, these older, “irrational” beliefs play a significant
role in our way of life – feng shui masters, fortune tellers and shamans still advise
CEOs and heads of state, as well as artists and curators.
